I'm curious how Mosquito Abatement Districts around the state are managing West Nile Virus this year, and how citizens, environmentalists and others are acting and reacting.
In Contra Costa they did some fogging for adults with piperonyl butoxide and pyrethrin in one area. Didn't hear much citizen reaction.
In Sacramento-Yolo they did aerial spraying with a similar product, but heavier on the PBO. I talked to a local landscape ecologist and IPMer following the spraying and he was pretty upset about the methods and materials.
Press reports and Mosquito Abatement District websites seem to ignore the PBO and play up the always low percentage of pyrethrin. My sense is that they are not being very diligent about informing the public about these adulticide treatments, how they made their decisions and what their followup monitoring and treatments will be.
