Leaffooted plant bugs have invaded almonds around Merced and other areas.
The outbreak is fairly widespread and we are taking action with insecticides. In a few orchards the damage is significant and occurred rapidly.
Look for damaged nuts. If you see gum (sap) from hulls, open the nut and examine the kernel for damage. We are finding the adults and eggs but they are difficult to find.
IN MY EXPERIENCE, WHEN YOU FIND DAMAGED NUTS, THE DAMAGE ALWAYS INCREASES OVER TIME AND THE RESULT WILL BE LOST YIELDS AND REJECTS.
These insects love almonds and they do not suddenly decide to leave so if you find damage you have to make a judgement call about the amount of economic damage they are causing. Re evaluate every week until after hull split. They cause brown spot and gummy nut rejects even after shell hardening.
