PTB damage is definitely the main culprit this year for NP almonds.
Here's our almond crack out samples.
40 orchards sampled (mostly Nonpareil and a few Sonora variety)
Each sample is 125 to 200 nuts from the ground before nuts are picked up.
Total Rejects 1.65%
NOW; 0.31%
PTB; 1.01%
BUG; 0.02%
ANT; 0.33%
The orchard with the highest % damage has 7.1% PTB.

Chris. I'm embarrassed to tell you how much PTB damage we had in some of our orchards this year, up to 25%! We tried Intrepid, but apparently a lot of worms were started before we sprayed at 5% hull split. I've always been able to control PTB at hull split, but not this year. Next year we'll go after PTB earlier.

My motto has been: when in doubt, spray the hull-split spray earlier rather than later. All of our higher damage blocks were sprayed 5 to 7 days later than I recommended and they were older, taller trees which have nuts splitting in the top a lot sooner than we think.
Start thinking 1% hull-split and watch out for years of cooler springs that delay the PTB 2nd flight and hatch to more closely coincide with hull-split. Usually warm springs and warm or average May weather will result in the PTB hatch occurring in June ahead of hull-split. Problem blocks may need PTB control at bloom, May and HS.

Chris - I had blocks that I treated in May and Early hull split with Intrepid that had no PTB damage but are running 1.5 to 3.5 % rejects from N.O.W.. I had 2 blocks that are young and are the first year they have nuts ( about 200 lbs per acres yield). These blocks had no May spray and a late hull split spray. These blocks have a moderate to high amount of damage and it is all P.T.B.
Do you think that treatments that are timed for PTB may be missing some of the NOW flight?

Some old sayings, such as "Misery loves company", come in handy at times like this! We are definitely seeing more PTB damage than I have seen in my 4 years in Kern county, and it is clear that it predominantly occurred before HS sprays went on. But what is worse is that we have some historically high NOW pressure blocks where we applied Imidan or Intrepid at HS and followed that with Intrepid 2 weeks later and are still getting hammered. The PTB and NOW damage overlap to a large degree in sites where the PTB damage is heaviest, the most common scenario in NP is old PTB damage (the PTB has gone from egg to adult in the nut) with a young (1-2N) NOW in residence. I am currently up to my elbows in harvest sample exams, but I will be able to present our findings (from the many trials with different combinations of materials in both almond and pistachio) as soon as we can process the large number of samples and I can analyze and summarize our results.

I don't actually have any nut crops but I am an Ag reporter in northern California and I was wondering how prevalent PTB is in my area (Colusa, Glenn and Tehama Counties). Any info would be helpful.

Yes, PTB is a big concern in Nor Cal, and in the counties you mentioned. Peaches and almonds always need protection against PTB. Prunes and other stone fruits are not quite as sensitive. Valent has several products that can be purchased thought the normal Ag channel. I would be happy to supply you with information.
Valent will have a booth at the upcoming CAPCA meeting in Sparks, NV. There will be lots of us there to help you with about any question you may have.
Please give me a call when you have a moment. Cheryl Norton - 530/755-7126 is my cell that is with me most of the time.
